Questions & Answers with Kiefer
What inspired you to write the first book in the Isle of Legends series, A Hero’s Awakening?
The inspiration for Isle of Legends stemmed from my lifelong love of fantasy worlds, as well as the video games, stories, and music that shaped my childhood. I wanted to create a world as rich, magical, and immersive as the ones I grew up with—like The Legend of Zelda, Final Fantasy, The Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, and more.
What advice would you give to inspiring authors?
Don’t give up—consistency is key! Also, don’t be afraid to take breaks from writing. Use that time to focus on other aspects of your book, like artwork, maps, and developing the lore. It can keep you inspired and help you see your story from different angles.
What are your favorite books and authors?
The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien was a major influence on me, especially when it comes to building rich worlds with deep cultures and dynamic characters. I’m a big fan of the fantasy adventure genre, with Harry Potter and The Inheritance Cycle being two of my favorites.
How long did it take you to complete the first book in the Isle of Legends series?
I began writing in September 2022 and finished in early 2025. However, the first ideas for the book actually came to me all the way back in 2015!
What was the most challenging part of writing your first book?
Staying focused was a real challenge for me, especially with ADHD. Writer’s block also hit harder than I expected, affecting my progress more than a few times. But overcoming these hurdles made finishing the book even more rewarding.
What are your hobbies and interests outside of writing?
I’m a guitarist who enjoys writing my own songs and experimenting with mixing genres. I’m also a big fan of gaming, with favorites like The Legend of Zelda, Resident Evil, Final Fantasy, Monster Hunter, Doom, Hollow Knight, Dark Souls, and more!
